Time Magazine Ranks Virgin Birth in Shark a Top News Story of 2008

December 22, 2008 - Time magazine

In 2008, shark genetics specialist Dr. Demian Chapman of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science announced the second-ever confirmed case of a virgin birth in a shark. Through a type of virgin birth known as parthenogenesis, this blacktip shark produced an offspring without mating and without any sperm.

Time magazine included the story in its annual list of the year's top news stories, ranking this #4 among the "Top 10 Oddball News Stories of 2008."
