Correspondents Report July 15, 2007 - ABC Radio National (Australia)
By EMMA GRIFFITHS
"One of the world's most expensive delicacies could be about to run out. Scientists say these soaring prices are driving a frenzy of poaching that seems likely to result in the mass extinction of sturgeon and the disappearance of caviar. The ABC's Emma Griffiths reports from the home of black caviar, the Caspian Sea. ...American fisheries scientist Phaedra Doukakis has travelled to the Caspian Sea coast of Kazakhstan to study the sturgeon population. For her, it's a chance to save a species, because there's every sign that the world is loving caviar to death."
