Dee Boersma Publishes Article in Science
January 18, 2007

Pew Fellow Dee Boersma recently published an article in the Policy Forum section of the 5 January 2007 issue of Science. In the article, which is entitled Anchovy Fishery Threat to Patagonian Ecosystem, Boersma and colleagues discuss the impacts to the ecosystem of overfishing anchovies. The article emphasizes that anchovies are an important intermediate step in the flow of energy through the food web and that overfishing could harm other fisheries and wildlife, and damage the ecotourism sector. The authors conclude that the costs and risks of anchovy fishing should be weighed, and that ecological data should be collected and used in decision-making.
